"What, you think I need your permission?" Mutt asked, in a low, cold voice.
Kayla stood up straight, moving away from the bathroom door. She reached out to lightly touch Mutt's face. "You tell me."
Mutt's body tensed and Kayla braced herself, but he merely nodded slightly to himself. He cleared his throat and looked her over with something very much like regret. "You know, Karrel always told me such great things about you. I was beginning to wonder if any of them were true."
"What?" Kayla stared. She felt like she'd just been slapped. "Hey, I didn't mean for this to—"
"Yeah, sure. You didn't mean for it to happen." Mutt lowered his gaze, but he didn't move away. "I didn't mean to get mixed up with your crazy boyfriend. I didn't mean to let my girl get herself killed. My whole stinkin' life is made up of things I didn't mean to do, same as everybody else, but shit happens, girlie. You just gotta pick yourself up and get over it, because this is your life, right here, right now. It doesn't always get any better. Things fall apart and people you love die on you and it hurts like fuck, so why even bother about what's right and what's wrong? And so here we are." He tossed his head slightly, his jaw tightening. "Or rather, there we were."
"Look, I said I'm sor—"
"Forget it. My bad." Mutt laughed suddenly, although there was no humor whatsoever in his face. He eyed her ruefully, shaking his head. "I guess I just mistook you for someone who cared."
"What? I don't even know you!" Kayla cried, exasperated.
"Exactly," Mutt said, as though that explained everything. He gave her a black look and drew a deep breath, folding his arms. "There's a spare blanket next door on the back of the chair. I suggest you use it. It gets real cold on the sofa at night."
He met Kayla's gaze steadily, a steely glint in his eye.
Kayla stared back at him, shocked at his sudden rejection. She felt her eyes flooding with hot tears and turned away, trembling, confused, sick with guilt. She'd screwed up, somehow. She'd hurt him, and she'd lost something. She wasn't quite sure what, but its loss made her feel colder and emptier inside than ever before.
She stepped quickly around him, refusing to meet his eyes, and walked unwillingly to the door. She put her hand on the handle and paused, her mind racing, wishing that she could say something, do something to make things all right again…
Mutt lunged forward, grabbed her, and slammed her back against the door. Kayla drew a breath to cry out and Mutt kissed her, hard, brutally, desperately. He pressed himself against her, crushing her, the heat of his body almost suffocating. She tried to pull free but he held her tight, the look on his face making a mockery of his words as he gasped into her mouth, his hands sliding roughly down her body.
With a cry, Kayla wrenched free and shoved him away from her.
